He almost didn't apply
Lukas, a mechanic from Switzerland, started his Mercy Ships application several times before finally taking the step. What began as one year of volunteering eventually brought him back for another two.
Taking the first step
Lukas first heard about Mercy Ships when a couple shared their experience of volunteering aboard a hospital ship at his church. He could imagine himself doing the same and started applying as a mechanic.
More than once.
But each time, he stopped before completing the application. Then came an email saying a mechanic was urgently needed. This time, Lukas went.
Then, one day, you stand on the gangway, and you can’t believe that you are really there.
One year became three
Lukas first joined Mercy Ships for a year in 2020. In 2022, he returned for another two, using his mechanical skills to keep vehicles, generators and essential equipment running.
For Lukas, a familiar profession had found a very different purpose.
“Every day I feel like I am doing something important, that I am making a difference.”
Could your technical skills have a place here?
You don't have to work in a hospital to help keep one moving.
Mechanics and other technical professionals keep vehicles, generators and essential equipment working so that patients, medical teams and supplies can get where they need to be. The current Mercy Ships vehicle mechanic role includes responsibility for vehicles, forklifts, generators, compressors and other power equipment.
