The ship that inspired his career became his mission
As a child in Denmark, Milan “Milo” Falsing dreamed of working at sea. Years later, he returned to the ship that first inspired him, no longer a passenger ferry, but the Africa Mercy®, and eventually became its captain.

A childhood dream comes full circle
At 11 years old, Milo was fascinated by the Danish ferry Dronning Ingrid. When the ferry stopped operating its Danish route in 1997, he was invited aboard for one final visit. The experience helped inspire his future career at sea.
Years later, that same ship had been transformed into the Africa Mercy®, a hospital ship. In 2011, Milo travelled to Sierra Leone and stepped aboard again, this time as a qualified First Officer.
A ship that had helped inspire his career had found an entirely new purpose. Soon, so would his maritime skills.
From first officer to captain
Milo originally planned to volunteer aboard for about five weeks in 2011. He stayed nearly two months and returned again in 2015. In 2019, at 32, he returned once more, this time as captain.
Because we take such good care of our ship, Mercy Ships expects the Africa Mercy to remain operational for more than another 10 years.
One maritime career. One ship that kept calling him back.
From First Officer to Captain, Milo found a way to use the profession he already loved for a very different purpose.
Where could your maritime career take you?
Your skills at sea could take you somewhere you never expected.
Deck officers, captains and other maritime professionals help keep our hospital ships safe, operational and ready to serve.
For Milo, a childhood fascination became a career. That career eventually brought him back to the very same ship, with an entirely new reason to be aboard.
