A hospital ship is also somebody's neighbourhood. There is a school, a dining room, birthdays and a community that knows each other well.
Childhood aboard
Kim-Anna's family served with Mercy Ships, so part of her childhood was spent on board. The ship runs an academy for crew children, and family accommodation is part of how long-term service is made possible at all.
Coming back by choice
She trained as a nurse and returned as a volunteer in her own right, this time working with patients rather than living alongside them.
What life on board is actually like
Cabins are small and shared. Crew eat together, worship together if they choose to, and live in close quarters with people from dozens of countries for months at a time.
It is not a posting for someone who wants privacy. It is unusually good for anyone who wants to belong to something.
