Lucy had pain in her jaw and went to the Mercy Ships dental clinic expecting an extraction. Untreated dental pain is one of the most common reasons people seek help, and for many it is the only healthcare they will access in a year.
What the examination found
The pain was not coming from a tooth. A tumour was growing in her jaw, and left alone it would have kept growing.
Because she was already in front of a clinician, she was referred to the surgical team rather than sent home with painkillers.
Why this story matters for the dental programme
Dental care is sometimes treated as the minor part of a field service. In practice it is a screening layer: hundreds of people pass through it who would never otherwise be examined by anyone.
